Starting Prep

Guide to BNPS for new families

Uniform
Stationery Supplies

All student book and stationery needs are pre-purchased from a single supplier at a bulk price and delivered to the classroom in preparation for the first day of school. A ‘Stationery Pack’ will be ordered for each child unless you advise us that you will be sourcing your own stationery (full list available upon request from the Office).
Readiness for School
To help develop independence and responsibility in readiness for school, you are encouraged to assist your child to:

Listen carefully and follow simple directions

Respect their own and others’ personal property

Speak politely

Learn to wait their turn

Recognise their own name on their belongings

Display good eating habits and manners

Manage their own toilet needs

Wash their hands thoroughly

Tidy up after themselves

Fasten their own shoes (we recommend velcro in Prep)

Be familiar with pick-up arrangements at the end of the school day
The First Week of Prep/Starting Dates & Times
What to pack in your child’s school bag

Play lunch/Recess e.g. muesli bar, fruit, a sandwich, sultanas or any other small snack and lunch for the second and third day (lunch is NOT required for the first day) – no nuts please

A refillable water bottle

A piece of fruit (or vegetable) for fruit break

School sunhat

Spare underwear and socks in a named zip lock bag

Library bag

Please ensure that all clothing and belongings are clearly labelled. See our labelling guidelines at https://beaumarisnorthps.vic.edu.au/parent-information/uniform/

Drop-off and Pick-up

Upon arrival to school, please help your child to locate his/her named bag peg, place school bag on the peg and proceed into the Prep Learning Centre.

At the end of the day, your child’s teacher will walk the class out to the Prep line up area.

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Arrangements: If your child is attending before school care, an OSHC staff member will walk them to the Prep Learning Centre where they will be signed in by one of the Prep teachers. The children will then have the opportunity to hang their bags on their pegs and collect what they need before line up. If your child is attending after school care, they will be picked up by an OSHC staff member and taken to the OSHC room.

Settling Into School Life

As a parent you have assisted your child in progressing through the many and varied developmental milestones such as crawling, walking and communicating. You will be able to continue your valuable role as your child transitions from pre-school to Prep and commences a new and exciting learning journey at BNPS. It is important to acknowledge that not all children will master their learning at the same time. You can provide encouragement and opportunities to assist in the development of many skills – consistent praise of any effort and achievement is always beneficial. Most children will settle quickly and happily into the routine of school; however, some may feel anxious about coming to school.

Modelling good coping strategies and reinforcing the positive aspects will assist your child to feel secure in their new environment.
