A - Z Parent Guide
Volunteering - Canteen
A parent volunteer roster system operates each Canteen day to assist our BNPS employed Canteen Manager, Jenny Marashli. The Canteen is staffed by volunteers – parents, grandparents and friends of the students and their families (as long as they have a Working with Children Check!).
We aim to make Canteen Duty a happy, relaxed, enjoyable time for all!

-
- Free lunch on the day of your Canteen shift for you & your child/ren as our way of saying ‘Thanks, you’re awesome’ – you can place your order when you come in or email canteen@beaumarisnorthps.vic.edu.au on the morning of your duty!
- It’s a great way to meet other parents or catch up with a friend!
- Your child will LOVE seeing you in the Canteen!
- You will be demonstrating to your child that you value their school, education and community – a key ingredient for student success!
- An onsite Canteen – if we don’t have volunteers, we struggle to operate!
- You will be helping to keep costs down for everyone (including yourself) and ensuring that any profits go directly to your child’s school!
- Great role modelling for your child – there is always time to help out!
- Volunteering is great for your mind and body (google it!) and gives you a warm fuzzy feeling!
-
Tasks include labelling lunch bags, filling lunch bags, putting hot food in the ovens, preparing sandwiches and serving snack foods over the counter at recess/playlunch. There are always experienced volunteers on duty who are more than willing to help newcomers familiarise themselves with the system.

A digital roster is used by parents to sign up for Canteen Duty – a link is available on Compass and our website. There are four shifts to choose from:
- Morning (9.00 – 11.30am)
Order collation & counter sales at recess - Afternoon (11.30am – 2.30pm)
Food preparation & counter sales at lunchtime - Bagging (12.30 – 2.30pm)
Placing food in bags/class baskets & counter sales at lunchtime - Sushi Pickup (11 – 11.30am)
Monday & Wednesday only
Collect from Southland and deliver to Canteen
Two assistants are required for each shift (one only for sushi pickup!). You can volunteer as often or as little as you like – most people roster themselves on a regular basis e.g. weekly, fortnightly, monthly or once, twice or three times a term. We will happily accept ‘walk-ins’ too (as long as you have a Working with Children Check)!
We look forward to seeing you in the Canteen soon!
- Morning (9.00 – 11.30am)
-
- Please sign in at the main School Office then head to the Canteen – if the Canteen is locked, please collect the key from the Office.
- Please tie your hair back (if appropriate), wash your hands and pop on an apron.
- Jenny (our lovely Canteen Manager) will then let you know what needs to be done!
-
If you are unable to make your rostered shift, it is your responsibility to find another volunteer to either swap or take on your shift so the Canteen can operate efficiently. If you are unsuccessful in your attempts to find a replacement, please let the Canteen know: canteen@beaumarisnorthps.vic.edu.au or 9589 5449 so that your name can be removed from the roster and others can signup for the shift.
We understand that last minute things pop up and although it is preferable that someone is present for the full shift, if you have been unsuccessful in your attempts to find someone to fill your shift, it would be appreciated if you could be present for even part of the shift (particularly at 11am for the morning shift and 1pm for the afternoon shift).
-
Younger children are welcome to come along to Canteen Duty – there are toys, a child’s table and chair set, pencils and paper. Please note that the duty of care for all children attending the Canteen rests with the parent at all times. Some parents mind a friend’s child while the friend is on duty and the friend reciprocates when they are on duty.
